Garlic exports continued to decline in May, and the continuous spread of overseas epidemics has had a certain impact on garlic exports. Affected by the epidemic, sea freight rates have increased significantly since last year, which has adversely affected China’s garlic exports. Declining export data has weakened domestic demand for garlic prices.

1. Analysis of the proportion of China’s garlic exporting countries

The world’s garlic importing countries mainly include Indonesia, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, the United States, Bangladesh, Russia, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. The total imports of these nine countries account for 56.77% of the total global imports. China’s garlic exporters are mainly Indonesia, Vietnam, Brazil, Malaysia, and Pakistan. Among them, Indonesia and Vietnam’s total imports account for 50% of China’s garlic exports. Indonesia accounts for one-third of China’s garlic exports. Indonesian household and industrial garlic consumption is 500,000 tons, and domestic production is only 20,000 tons. The other 480,000 tons are dependent on imports, of which 90% are from China. China’s garlic exports to Indonesia are generally of low quality, and the unit price of garlic exports to Indonesia is only about 75% of the average unit price of Chinese garlic exports. Although Southeast Asia and other countries have been actively expanding garlic in recent years, due to the influence of climate and garlic species, the size of garlic is generally not as good as domestic garlic, and its appearance does not have many advantages compared with Chinese garlic. 2. The export volume of garlic continues to decrease

my country’s garlic exports are mainly primary products such as fresh chilled garlic, dried garlic, vinegar garlic and brine garlic. The development of garlic deep processing is lagging behind.

70%-80% of garlic is exported to overseas supermarkets through refrigeration. According to customs data, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic in May 2021 was 118,577.08 tons, the cumulative export volume was 634,698.52 tons, and the export value was 114.8798 million US dollars. The amount was 641.7194 million U.S. dollars, the average export price was 968.82 U.S. dollars/ton, and the cumulative average export price was 5060.41 U.S. dollars/ton. The export volume decreased by 18.2% month-on-month and 57.82% year-on-year. The cumulative export volume decreased by 20.26% compared with the same period last year.

According to customs data, in May 2021, the export volume of dried garlic was 18,785.32 tons, the cumulative export volume was 86,109.45 tons, the export value was 44,231,100 US dollars, the cumulative export value was 21,123,900 US dollars, and the average export price was 2354.56 US dollars/ton. The average price was 2473.68 US dollars/ton, the export volume increased by 10.51% month-on-month and 9.22% year-on-year, and the cumulative export volume decreased by 6.22% compared with the same period last year.

According to customs data, the export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic moss and garlic seedlings (green garlic) in May 2021 was 1,592.91 tons, the cumulative export volume was 9243.11 tons, the export value was 2.937 million U.S. dollars, the cumulative export value was 17.6422 million U.S. dollars, and the average export price The cumulative export price was US$1,843.77/ton, and the cumulative average export price was US$1900.87/ton. The export volume decreased by 0.40% month-on-month and 3.56% year-on-year. The cumulative export volume increased by 9.38% compared with the same period last year.

3. The average export price of garlic has fallen

In May 2021, the average export price of garlic was US$968.82/ton, a decrease of 0.86% from the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 26.67%. The export volume of fresh or refrigerated garlic fell in May, and the average export price fell.

4. The data of all garlic exporting countries have decreased

In May, the exporters of garlic were still dominated by Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. The export volume has decreased compared with April. Among them, Indonesia’s export volume in May 2021 was 39,100 tons, down 16.32% from April; Vietnam’s export volume in May 2021 was 16,300 tons, down 20.86% from April; Malaysia The export volume in May 2021 was 8,500 tons, down 17.34% from April. On the whole, garlic exports as a whole decreased from April.
